Enlightenment

Description

Enlightenment is an abstract art series drawn by Mr.HEAD, a cleaning robot that was modified to become a painting robot. Could a work drawn by a robot with no sense of self truly be artistic? The painting robot now named Mr. HEAD paints randomly using the dripping method. The randomly layered paint evokes the action painting style of Jackson Pollock. Enlightenment is heavily influenced by the philosophy of Buddha. The founding father of Buddhism, Buddha, was enlightened in a state where everything including himself, all living things, the universe, and nothingness became infinitely equal and abstract. If a cleaning robot has no sense of self, the logic follows that Mr. HEAD has achieved the same state. Enlightenment is an attempt to have a cleaning robot depict enlightenment on an open canvas.

Enlightenment は掃除ロボットが改造され生まれた画家ロボット、Mr.HEAD が描くアブストラクトアートシリーズ。自我の無い機械が描いた作品にアート性はあるのか。 Mr.HEAD と名付けられた画家ロボットはランダムに動きドリッピングをし続ける。無為に描かれた無数の絵の具の重なりはジャクソンポロックのアクションペインティングを彷彿させる。 Enlightenment はブッダの哲学に影響を受けている。仏教の開祖、ブッダは無我の境地で悟りを開いたと言われる。それは、自分自身を含んだあらゆる生物や無機物、宇宙や無、全てが均質的で限りなく抽象化された状態だ。掃除ロボットに我が無いとすれば、逆説的にMr.HEADは無我の境地にあるのではないか。Enlightenment は掃除ロボットの描いた作品に悟りの風景を描くチャレンジだ。
